Struggling with self-care?

October 21, 2019

Mums these days are so fricken busy, it’s like everyone wants something from us and we have nothing left for ourselves.

I have many times overcommitted for fear of letting someone down but always end up in a heap where I can’t even make decisions like what’s for dinner (decision fatigue).

When are we going to give back to ourselves by setting up boundaries and valuing the time spent on our wellbeing?

As a people pleaser, it is hard to change my ways. I don’t feel I have time to spend on myself, as I am busy doing things for my family and friends.

But more and more I am starting to realise that this is the missing link to being sane, to finding purpose and living a balanced life.

On and off over the years I start something and once I feel better, the good habit I’ve been working on drops off. I tend to think ‘I’m good now, so I can just get back to what I was doing before the meltdown/overwhelm.’

Oh how wrong I am! It is in the good times that we must keep going so we minimise the rollercoaster of emotions and can think clearer.

It’s a daily struggle to keep up but it is worth it when you see how it impacts the rest of your day in a positive way. Self-care is so important. If I don’t start my day right, my whole day feels like I’m a hamster on a hamster wheel.

Things I try to remember each day:

Starting my day with a 5 minute meditation, some gentle yoga and writing down my affirmations sets me up for a great day ahead. I am more calm with the kids, I don’t put too much pressure on myself, I don’t overthink and I give my body some attention to iron out any aches and pains I am feeling.

Going to bed too late impacts me on the following day and then the rest of the week. Try to get to bed early and get 7-8 hours sleep. When I am tired I don’t eat well and make choices that aren’t good for me. I can’t function properly.

Move for at least 30 minutes each day. If it’s going for a walk, ride or workout, it’s going to help me feel better. It’s giving back to myself so I can be there for others, my body needs it and I make better choices because of it.
