Playing hide and seek with sugar - That Sugar Film

A lot of people are talking about That Sugar Film. It’s because it’s a powerful expose not only on how much sugar is hidden in processed foods, but the rotten effect is had on our body.

Australian Actor Damon Gameau, who had given up sugar a number of years ago, decided to see what would happen if he went back to the sweet stuff. His food experiment lasted 60 days, and involved eating perceived healthy low fat foods and drinks, not including confectionery, ice cream or soft drink.

As advised by his medical and nutrition experts, he aimed to consume the equivalent of 40 teaspoons of sugar per day, which is the average ‘intake’ sugar intake. 4 grams of sugar on a food label = 1 teaspoon.

What happens to Gameau during the experiment is alarming, all while eating breakfast cereals, low fat yoghurt, fruit bars and juices. The effects on his physical and mental state is staggering, he shows the first signs of a fatty liver after 3 weeks, his moods fluctuate, he becomes snappy, his energy levels go up and down like a rollercoaster, his brain becomes ‘fuzzy’ and his waistline expands by 10cms by the end of the experiment.

This thought provoking, and entertaining film really makes you start to look at your own diet and wellbeing, and that of your family. Surprisingly, 80% of product on the supermarket shelves contains some form of sugar. The packaging and marketing of most of these foods has been so clever that it makes you believe the product is healthy.

My tip to you is to go and see the film, start looking closely at food labels so you really understand what you are consuming, or better still, choose foods that don’t require a label at all as they are likely to be fresh fruits and vegetables and contain much more nutrition than a packet of processed food.

A sweet life doesn’t need to be taken literally. Nobody needs to eat and drink 40 teaspoons a day, 280 teaspoons a week, or a total of 102,200 teaspoons (2000 cups) a year of SUGAR.
