As a personal trainer who believes in lasting, achievable changes to your body, I think it’s importance to focus on ‘fitness’, not ‘shifting kilograms’ to improve your chances of getting leaner, stronger, and fitter.
Having a weight loss goal is often not enough to keep you motivated in the long run. Our vanity is transient, life gets busy, and suddenly the ‘perfect body’ or dropping ‘3 dress sizes’ doesn’t seem so important.
But valuing your health, and how your body works and feels, over how it looks, is a far more powerful incentive to exercise and make good food choices day in and day out.
Making your ‘health’ a priority, respecting your body as the precious temple it is – carrying you through all the stages of life – is the most life-changing goal you could ever have. You’ll be more likely to stop binge eating junk food when you’re stressed or bored, and enjoy getting out and moving, if you decide that your health is where your heart is.
If you’re working out just to burn calories, it won’t be long before you’re skipping sessions and tiring of the commitment it takes to track all your food and activity.
Instead, decide to do Bootcamp to challenge your body, increase your flexibility and endurance and connect with other people. That way, you’re more likely to stick at it and actually ENJOY group fitness.
Weight loss is an empty goal. Don’t set yourself up for failure. Focus on your fitness and a strong lean body will come naturally.
